Important vote on data protection legislation

On Monday October 21 the European Parliament group for Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) will vote on a proposal for a Data Protection Regulation for Europe that will replace national legislation, for instance the Swedish Personal Data Act (PUL). Important for research is how informed consent will be treated for register based studies, whether persons will have the right to be removed from registers, and how data collected for other purposes may be used for research. The scientific communities in Scandinavia and the UK have support from our governments and many politicians in the effort to protect the legal possibilities to perform register based research in the future.
