Extended application deadline (29 March) for SINGS elective course: Introduction to spatial methods, 9-13 May in Uppsala

The course aims to provide basic practical understanding of how to integrate GIS (Geographical Information System) and spatial analysis in social and medical research. GIS comprise a wide range of activities including the collection of data, analysis of spatially coded data and presentation of data (may include maps, 3D spheres, videos, or similar). Spatial analysis is the collection name for statistical analyses used to detect spatial patterns in (human) interaction, spread (of ideas, infections, etc.), contexts (neighbourhood analysis), and similar.
The course aims to 1) introduce the students to GIS and map-making, 2) to introduce students to basic models in spatial analyses, 3) to make the students aware of measurement biases that are related to misuse of spatially coded data.

Specific entry requirements: No previous experience in GIS (Geographical Information System) is necessary. Basic statistical knowledge and experience of using Excel (or equivalent spreadsheet software) is necessary.

The course is practically oriented mixing lectures and computer labs. Examination will be performed as a take-home examination.

The target group is doctoral students in the fields of epidemiology, public health, sociology, demography, psychology, statistics, health economics, and other medical and social sciences. Post-doctoral fellows are also welcome to apply.
