The government has decided to give a special investigator an assignment to propose a complementary regulation regarding the process of handling personal data within research. One of the aims of the investigation is that Sweden also in the future shall continue to have good potential to be world leading in register-based research without compromising the protection of individual privacy.
Recently the new EU data protection regulation entered into force. It will be applied as a law in all member states from 25 May 2018 and will replace “Personuppgiftslagen” in Sweden. The data protection regulation needs to be complemented by special provisions with respect to research and other areas. Professor Cecilia Magnusson Sjöberg has therefore been asked to propose a regulation of how personal data should be processed when used for research purposes.
A first report of the assignment should made by 1 June 2017 and the final report is due by 8 December at the latest.
