Content: Course at advanced level for students who want an introduction to classic theory and contemporary research on social stratification. The course provides an overview of some classic and recent theory and research in (a) theories of social class with empirical applications (b) social mobility and inequality of educational opportunity, and (c) social stratification in other dimensions, e.g. gender, ethnicity, family and life-course, political preferences and health. The focus will be on both descriptions of social stratification in modern societies, and on explanations.
